The Qualitative Research Network

Supporting staff and postgraduate students

The Qualitative Research Network (QRN) is a community of practice designed to support staff and postgraduate students (PGRs) in undertaking novel and impactful qualitative research. We intend to maximise opportunities for researchers at any level to share, learn and discuss qualitative research theories and approaches. We cover a broad range of topics and activities, from creative research methods to ethical issues in real world research, from research co-production to writing qualitative papers for REF. QRN supports inter- and intra-faculty events, like talks, workshops and data sessions, with a view to encouraging the development of transdisciplinary collaborations.

QRN is chaired by Dr. Thierry Middleton and Dr. Alessandra Fasulo. Both are involved in organising events, linking researchers with common interests, and sharing resources across the network. In collaboration with PGR students we have created Special Interest Groups (SIGS), led by staff and PGR students from different faculties, to facilitate more focused exchanges around specific methodological issues.

Please feel free to get in touch with Thierry and Alessandra for matters of general interest, or to get in touch with any of the SIGS leads if you would like to propose an initiative or would like to share research ideas with a more focused audience.

QRN values the contribution of partners and collaborators external to the university. Inclusivity is a core aim for us; we encourage, and facilitate when possible, reaching out to local organisations and groups for the development of meaningful and impactful research projects.

Text-based approaches

This group focuses on approaches, such as Thematic or Narrative Analysis, based on textual data, with the goal of sharing innovations and development and supporting rigorous practices.

Lead: Thierry Middleton.

The Origins of the QRN

The QRN was founded in 2023 as a synergy between Psychology and Sport Science, in recognition of a need for a community of practice for qualitative researchers at the ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø. An inaugural QRN seminar featured a diverse range of presentations showcasing the breadth and depth of qualitative expertise across the school. Roundtable discussions with the attendees gave us the direction of travel in terms of the network activities. We have since reached out to the University with a membership basis of over a hundred members. Follow up events have included synergies between illustration and qualitative research, the safety of researchers working in the field and creative approaches to collaborative research.

Join the QRN

QRN membership is always open to new PGRS and staff. Members will receive information and invitations to events, are welcome to suggest or lead events based on their interests, professional development needs and areas of expertise. Prospective members are encouraged to email Thierry Middleton or Alessandra Fasulo to be added to the member email list and gain access to the online resource bank.
